Illuminate Somerville - 2021
Illuminate Somerville - 2021
One night display on Sat., Dec. 11th, dusk) (Rain date: Sun., Dec 12th, dusk) 50 Bow Street Somerville, MA Participating in this year's Somerville Illuminations Lantern Project organized by the City of Somerville and the Somerville Arts Council , Denise Price drew upon her memory of traveling to Barcelona, Spain. While in the Basilica Sagrada de Familia, she was captivated and inspired by the stained glass windows envisioned by Gaudi. Unlike most churches, the entire Joan Vila-Grau’s stained-glass windows within the Temple truly create a transcendent atmosphere and place for reflection and introspection. For Denise, the site of rainbow hues streaming to the ground was inspirational and moving. Taking those graduated hues and creating a similar effect on a micro scale, the paper lanterns were arranged to line the sidewalk and cast a slight transitional hue. The sidewalk is a path we all travel, but the viewers' internal path is entirely their own. The artist’s goal is to allow the viewer to feel the warmth and creative glow she experienced within the Basilica and to inspire them to be present and self-reflective. Consisting of approximately 60 luminaries, the display extends the entire length of the building at 50 Bow Street. The illuminated ship resting on the pedestal symbolizes our individuality and serves as a reminder that we are all sailing through this life. The cargo we chose to fill our unique vessel with is entirely our own. Choose your path wisely. Manage your stormy seas. Calmer and safer waters most certainly lie ahead.
